Hello,

My BFF and yard sale partner-in-crime took a free (yes, I said free) upholstery class at a local fabric store. She wanted to see if she could learn how to redo some of the tattered treasures we find on our Sat morning hunts.

She tried her new skill on a ripped red ottoman. I couldn't believe it was the same piece when she was done (sorry she forgot to get a before pic). I can't wait to take a class and try it myself. We may have to start bringing a bigger truck on sat!

I absolutely love the new Tai Pan Trading store in Boise. Their new Spring garden decor is filled with topiaries, urns, bird cages, planters, and statues that look vintage-like you could have picked them up at an estate sale. I see many future paychecks headed their way.

Vintage birdcage wedding card holder

Hello,

With June weddings right around the corner, I wanted to share with you an adorable vintage birdcage cardholder I made for my niece's wedding last summer.

We wove pretty ribbon in her wedding colors through the wire and glued sparkly scrapbook letters on the front of a vintage birdcage. Guests could either slip the cards through the wires or the door.

She also had a fun pink wedding wish tree. Instructions were typed up and posted in a pink frame. Guests could write a wedding wish on scraps of pink paper and tie to the tree with orange ribbon (her colors were pink and orange). Really cute and inexpensive!

Hello,

Paris is my fantasy city. I collect Eiffel Towers and have dreamed about someday sipping coffee at a sidewalk cafe.

I think it's the combination of romance, unbelievable architecture, art, and channeling my great grandmother, who lived in Paris, that fuels my obsession.

This January, my New Years resolution was to start a Paris Fund. I bought a pink polka-dot pig and put sparkly scrapbook letters on it. It's in the kitchen and reminds me everyday of my goal. I'm targeting a milestone birthday (not saying which one) in a year an a half for my trip.

My best gf and I checked out The Nest's new location on Eagle tonight. They have such a fun collection of whimsical decorative items. We absolutely loved the new burlap accessories-such as pillows, table runners, and ottomans (some with adorable dots). They looked great on the outdoor furniture. We're now hoping for an early Spring!

Swanky bar-mixing old and new

I hope everyone has recovered from the holidays. I had a great 2 weeks off from my day job and was wishing I was independently wealthy when I had to return.

I took a few pics of my swanky bar to share. The bar is a mixture of old and new. What's new: bar is from cost plus, silver chandelier from home depot, curtions from hobby lobby. Whats old: mirror behind the bar is a 10.00 thrift store find I repainted black, columns are from an old hotel, barstools and vintage ice bucket are a yard sale find.

I love hosting cocktail parties and always have a bottle of bubbly chilling in the ice bucket. There's also an old bell on the bar everyone loves to ring for service!

Tonight, the Shabby House on State Street in Boise is having an estate sale and gala event to benefit The Idaho Humane Society. A $5 donation at the door gets you appetizers, beverages, and live music. There will be Bon fires in the garden and the whole house will be decked out for the holidays! I want to wish you all a Happy Easter this Sunday! I hope you spend the day doing whatever makes you happy-worship, searching for eggs, munching on a chocolate bunny-or all of the above.

I love vintage Easter items. They remind me of Easter morning (which was only topped by Christmas morning) and the 3 of us girls running down the hall to find our baskets. They were stuffed with giant chocolate bunnies, jelly beans, marshmallow eggs, and small treasures hidden in the green plastic grass (toys when we were little and lip gloss when we got older).

Super Shabby Schoolhouse Sale

It's been awhile since I've posted. February was a whirlwind with my son's wedding, news of a new baby, and the sad passing of our beloved Alaiki. The wedding was beautiful with a vintage theme. I'll post pics shortly of all the fun decorating items we came up with.

Alaiki's passing was extremely hard as he was with us 15 years. He was a sweet dog who was part of the family (he slept on our bed until his arthritis made it too hard to get up). My son used to ride him when he was little, and he once stole a chocolate pie off the counter my Mother had just finished baking. You really don't realize the impact an animal has on your life and the void when they are gone.  I still look for him at night when I get home. If you have a little furry friend who gives you unconditional love, be sure to pat him on the head and give him an extra treat tonight.

A few weekends back, I went to a super shabby sale in an old schoolhouse.  The house itself was to-die-for with it's old brick facade, crumbling fountain, charming trellis with climbing vines, and upstairs balcony. It was like something from Gone With The Wind-but in Idaho!

The schoolhouse was filled with shabby treasures, garden decor and Easter displays. I wanted to stay all day! Enjoy!

P.S.-My new fabulous daughter-in-law loves vintage and is now my "assistant" helping me with eBay listings and the antique mall. We just listed some vintage Barbie outfits and accessories. See our eBay link if you're interested.

Love is in the Air

Love is in the air as Valentine's Day approaches and beckons us to buy flowers and trinkets of affection for those we love-and consume huge quantities of chocolate! This February is extra special for our family as my son is getting married the 26th to a great gal. Lots of wedding details and planning this month.

Here are a few pics of my booth at Antique World Mall all decorated up for the day of love!

A small pink tealight lamp with sparkly crystals sits on a pair of blue heart shaped end tables with stenciled bird cages that say "fly" and chandeliers that say "light".

I love the pink and blue carousel child's planter-so charming!

I added creme shabby chic shades to a pair of vintage crystal lamp bases. You can always find misc lamp bases at yard sales and thrift shops for a few dollars and can pick-up new shades at Target and Home Depot.

Pretty tulips on a green flower decoupaged stepping stool.

White cake plates line-up hoping to be taken home and filled with chocolate cake and fudge frosting.

Everyone needs a touch of Paris with a silver Eiffel Tower or wooden Eiffel coat rack.

A wedding chapel birdhouse sits on cute hatboxes (hatboxes make great storage on shelves or under the bed).

Vintage Bride and Groom champagne glasses-so pretty with the original ribbons and dove decorations-sit on a shabby gold and pink tray.

Garden decor is already flying out of the shop as everyone hopes for an early Spring (this cute green planter box was sold the day after I dropped it off)!

A pink porch column makes a cute candle holder (it only looks crooked in the pic).

A red and white polka-dot apron would be super cute to wear while you cook dinner for your loved ones!

Twas the week before Christmas

Hello,

It's the week before Christmas. And even though I've got this whole week off, I already know I'll run out of time to do everything by Saturday. With decorating, shopping, manicures with the gals, cleaning, the xmas eve "kids" craft project (the kids are all in their 20s now), cooking, friends party, etc, etc. I'm sure I'll end up wrapping presents until the wee hours on Christmas Eve.

I've been snapping random pics of all the cute Christmas decor at the Antique World Mall and thought I should post them before Christmas is over!

Hello,

I'm back from taking November off for National Novel Writing Month. No, I didn't complete a whole novel of 50,000 words in a month, but I did write 4 chapters and 12,000 words-which is more than I've written this whole year! I also developed some daily writing habits. I found I do have time to write at night while enjoying a glass of wine instead of watching some mindless TV show. I'm going to continue with my novel and now have a goal to complete it over the next year! I wish you luck with your challenges and dreams!

I did spend a little time at the antique mall sprucing up for Christmas and also attended the fabulous Christmas Open House at the Shabby House (stay tuned).

It's starting to feel a little spooky!

It's starting to feel a little spooky in your fav store, outside, and even in your very own home as skeletons, witches, and creepy crawling critters of all kinds begin their invasion. Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday-my son was born the day before Halloween! I remember, back in 1990, wearing black leggings and a bright orange smock to my baby shower (just a few days before I gave birth). Those were my skinny days (sigh) and Matt was a big baby, so somehow (unintentionally) I looked like a giant pumpkin. I spent that first Halloween happily with him in the hospital-his first costume a diaper and receiving blanket-while children trick-or-treated outside the hospital window.

Plus, I'm a horribly chicken person. I hate scary movies, violence, and pretty much conflict of any kind, so Halloween is the perfect holiday. You can be scared-all in fun!

These pics are a repeat from The Shabby House in Boise last Halloween. I haven't had a chance to get over there to snap new ones (hopefully this weekend), but I love the decorations they did last year and felt they deserved a second showing.

Memories of a Pink Portable Hair Dryer!

Hello,

Every once in awhile in my treasure hunting, I come across an item that sparks a vivid memory. The memory can be unpleasant-like a pack of multiplication flash cards that reminded me of hours in my basement being drilled by a tutor. Math was never my strong suit! Or the memory can be a pleasant one-like the comforting blankie you carried around with you until it was threadbare and falling apart.

I recently found the pink portable hair dryer above at a yard sale. My Mother had one similar to this she would put us girls under after our bath. I loved the soothing sound of the air coming through the hose as it filled-up on the top of your head like a big balloon. When it was your turn, you grabbed your favorite book and snuggled down in your flannel pajamas as the warm air dried your hair. It was a simple, happy pleasure during an innocent time.

I took it into the shop to sell, but I'm now debating bringing it back home to use after my next bubble bath. One day soon, my hubby may come home to find me in flannel pjs reading a Nora Roberts novel with a goofy looking contraption on my head.

I love to spell out words with old scrabble or game letters. Of course, this one spells out my fantasy city-Paris!

Time to send the flamingos flying!

Hello,

If you're like me, you've finally realized you can no longer ignore what the chill in the air, the kids back in school, or the Halloween decorations in your fav store mean. Yes, summer is officially over! It's time to send the flamingos flying back to their storage in the garage or attic until next Spring along with any stray garden gnomes.

The one nice thing about Fall in my yard is the brilliant blooms of the Trumpet Creeper that climbs the trellis over my front walkway. It's summer's last hurrah before everything fades to brown.

Here's a few pics of my front yard (while it still looks good before that first freeze). On the bright side, decorating for Christmas is not too far away (Michael's Craft Store has Christmas decorations already on the shelves).

My obsession with Eiffel towers extends to the front porch table. Pretty pink petunias pop-out of a rusty watering can. A finial sits under a glass cloche.

Another iron Eiffel tower and shabby little church birdhouse sits on top of a cabinet. I found this cabinet at a yard sale painted bright orange for $2.00. I painted and distressed it adding decorative touches with chunky stamps loaded with brown and creme paint.

The trumpet creeper welcomes you!

Love my new spot in the Annex!

Hello,

I absolutely love, love, love my new spot in the Annex at Antique World Mall. It's the perfect size. I even love the background color (brown) and the pink chippy cement floor. I hung (or should I say my sweet hubby hung) two sparkly chandeliers (from Home Depot-they look old but are new and were only $68.00 ea) and added a black scroll border. These pics didn't turn out great, but I couldn't wait any longer to share them with you. I hope you stop by to check-out my petite booth as well as all the other great vendors in the Annex.

Move to the Annex!

Hello,

It's always good to make a change: new hairdo, new room color, new man (except in my case-I've got a keeper). Realizing my own limitations of working full-time, trying to self-publish a Children's book with my Mother, taking care of my family, and my inability to successfully clone myself, I recently decided to downsize my large booth at Antique World Mall.

To my delight, when I approached Sue (the fabulous owner of the mall) and hesitantly told her of my plans, she had the perfect petite spot in the Annex available. The Annex, "features antiques and vintage treasures, painted furniture, shabby chic, and many unique items. The Annex is a fun place to shop for distinctive home decor and imaginative gifts," I quote the website. I absolutely adore The Annex and was thrilled to become a part of it! My area is the small "nook" located in the back hallway by the emergency exit (hopefully, it won't take an emergency to get you to visit my booth).

I'm not quite ready to share pics yet as I've got some sparkly chandeliers to hang this weekend to complete the booth. But I did want to share some pics of my new, favorite family at the mall. They own, "Shabby Attic Furniture" (see link on the right) and have the front part of the Annex as well as one (or more) of the rooms. Their adorable painted furniture, nick-nacks, and treasures always make me smile. I also met, Diane or "Red" (named for her pretty red hair) whose booth, "Boutique Rousse" specializes in vintage dresses, gowns, sparkly shoes, and jewelry (see link on the right). I love her booth and have posted pics of it in the past.

"Let's Make a Deal" at Antique World Mall

This Sunday from 11am-3pm at the Antique World Mall in Boise, Idaho we are having our first "Let's Make a Deal" event. Participating dealers (such as myself) will be present to "Wheel and Deal" their merchandise (my booth is on Paris lane-of course). Basically, if you see something you like, make an offer! There will also be refreshments and drawings for Antique World Mall Money at Noon and 1pm. Who doesn't need free money to spend on antiques!

A Paris Work in Progress

Hello,

I was sipping my coffee a few weekends back wishing I was somewhere-anywhere-other than rainy Boise, Idaho. And then it struck me like the flash of lightning in the sky. If I can't make it to Paris anytime soon, why not have Paris come to me? I mean, isn't Paris more of a feeling? A romantic feeling created by sidewalk cafes, chandeliers, chic haircuts, something pink, and maybe a small poodle. Even though I have a large lab, I could still try to create some of the Paris feeling here-in my own front yard.

As my husband napped, I ran to the closest discount store and bought a cheap pair of creamy gauze curtains. I found a strong wire in the garage and pulled it from the front post to the house to hang the curtains on. I used a small cup hook to tie the curtains back with natural raffia. We had already cleaned out the beds in preparation of landscape rocks that would be delivered the next week. Another quick trip to Lowe's produced a pretty flowering tree and ornamental grass. I moved the fountain and some extra chairs from the back yard, added a few decorative accessories here and there. Instant Paris!

My husband woke from his nap. He did a double-take as he headed to the mailbox. "What happened out here?" he exclaimed! I think the curtains surprised him the most. He's still waiting for a letter from the subdivision committee complaining they violate code.

We're still waiting for the weather to clear so the rocks can be delivered. And I also went "green" by replacing the old malibu lights with solar lights. They are very sparkly at night and brighter than I thought. I'll post more pics when the rain finally quits.

In the meantime, try to create a little Paris romance of your own. If you have any luck, send me a pic and I'll post on the site.

Rainy Day Updates

The rain in Boise continues to pour and pour-drenching any and all hopes of gardening, bike riding, camping or just laying about in the sun with the morning paper and a cup of joe. With nothing else to do, I headed for the Antique World Mall in Boise to update displays and put out new adorable items from my recent treasure hunts.

Hope you enjoy. And if the sun is shining in your world today, please soak up a few rays for me!

My fav recent find. A pretty-in-pink vintage girl lamp. She's all dressed-up and ready to party the night away.

This adorable child's vase makes me smile. A porcelain pair of puppies sit patiently under a glass cloche.

This pink bathroom cabinet has gold trim and a pretty scrolled edge on top.

The black bookshelf reads, "One Upon a Time" and holds vintage children's books such as "Mother Goose" and "Mary Poppins".

A toy acrobatic clown flies above the "Chips", "Nuts", and "Candies" red and white striped porcelain snack holders.

A baby gown and bonnet, pink baby booties, pink croqueted child's shawl with pom-poms, and rocking horse music box sit inside a pretty blue suitcase.

Remember sitting in the Doctor's office reading "Highlight" magazines for children? I spent many hours reading these while waiting for allergy shots in the 70s. I found a few in great condition with all the puzzles and activities still waiting to be completed!

"Evening in Wonderland"

Hello,

The Shabby House in Boise held a benefit this past Friday for Friends in Action. The theme was an "Evening in Wonderland". The night turned out to be just as wonderful as the dismal Boise weather stalled its raining and blowing long enough to grace us with a perfect spring evening! Whether it was a gift from the Gods for Mother's Day or just because Mother Nature knew it was for a good cause, we didn't care as we sipped on wine and basked in the sunlight. There were fabulous estate sale items, wine, food, and music to enjoy while shopping for the perfect treasure. Here's some pics from the fun event:

A new, adorable booth has opened at Antique World Mall filled with frilly, fabulous vintage party and prom dresses, shoes, and sparkly accessories. Who wouldn't feel like a princess dancing the night away with her prince in one of these pretty outfits.

The next time your headed out for a big night on the town, why not stop by and pick-out a swanky vintage dress or even one shimmery bangle to complete your ensemble. I love the black and pink polka dot dress above-if only I was a size 8!

Save after Six Sale at Antique World Mall-Tonight

Tonight is the big "Save After Six Sale" again at the Antique World Mall in Boise. Every third Friday of the month, from 6-9pm, dealers participate in additional discounts in their booths (I do 30% off-even on sale items). Easter is in full swing at the Antique World Mall in Boise with bunnies bouncing off the walls and ready to hop right out the door and into your car. Here's some fun pics of cute Easter bunnies and Spring displays in my booth.

A charming German paper-mache egg sits inside a pretty angel vase and a green wood chicken wire basket.

White spotted eggs can be found in a glass canister on the yellow wicker laundry basket with funky matching bathroom set.

A vintage sugar panoramic egg rests on a chenille chair tissue cover. Each egg has a unique image inside and is so fun to collect. I'm always amazed when I find one in the original cellophane wrapper without a chip or crack in the sugar!

How To: Cute Burlap Lampshade

Hello,

I've noticed a charming new decorating trend in the latest issues of Country Living and Flea Market Style magazine of recovering chairs, couches, and throw pillows with vintage feed sacks or burlap. I decided to try my hand at this cute trend in the form of a lampshade to top a pretty gilded cherub lamp I found on a recent treasure hunt!

Here's the materials you'll need:

Burlap Fabric (only $2.99/yard or an old feed sack if you have one)
Pretty Trim (to hide inside seams and finish-off the top and bottom of shade)
Lamp Shade (Self-Adhesive)
Lamp Base
Hot Glue Gun

Once you have all your materials, lay-out the fabric and use the peel-off paper shade that covers the adhesive for your pattern. Cut-out leaving a 1-inch margin around all sides.

Wrap the fabric around the shade (the self-adhesive will grab the fabric). Reposition if needed until straight. Then tuck the edges over the top and under the bottom. Hot glue gun the trim around the top and bottom and also to cover the rough edges of the tucked-in fabric inside. Put shade on base.

Stand back and admire your work! Super easy and only takes about an hour.

Here it is at my booth at the Antique World Mall. Looks so adorable on top of an old white fridge in my "garden" section.

Cake Plates

Hello,

Cake plates are fun and give a funky 50s feel to your kitchen. I found the perfect sparkly silver one above around Christmas (of course I wasn't suppose to be buying anything for me) and just couldn't pass it up! It took me a few months of searching thrift shops and Goodwill to find a ribbed glass top to complete it (for only $2.00).

I keep it on the counter of my kitchen-tempting those at the bar to order up a slice of chocolate cake or cherry pie! If you're in the neighborhood, stop by for a slice. And don't forget to tip!

This cute iron waitress can serve up a tiny cupcake, single truffle, or in this case-a small silver bottle of absolute.

A weathered red and black Cafeteria sign hangs above the wine rack. A model train loops around the top of the kitchen past the Eiffel Tower and the Golden Gate bridge. We bought the train when my son was little at Christmas to go around the tree. I decided it would be fun to enjoy year round, so after convincing my husband (he's such a good sport), we mounted the track and a bridge above the kitchen. It's fun to have running at parties with the search light on and the engine smoking!

I love vintage kitchen items-hand stitched aprons, weathered scales, pretty plates, worn canisters and spice jars add a bit of charm to your kitchen. Even one whimsical vintage item can enchant an otherwise dull decor. Here's a few pics of cute vintage kitchens at the Shabby House and Antique World Mall in Boise.

Enjoy your morning cup of coffee and chocolate croissant on this adorable tiny metal table with pretty scroll work. It's small enough to fit on a front porch or apartment deck.

A weathered hutch looks great in any kitchen. You can find one for cheap at a flea market, thrift shop, or yard sale. Just sand or paint over the old color and distress the edges with fine sandpaper to show through the old color or original wood.

An red bubblegum machine can hold seasonal treats such as conversation hearts for Valentine's Day, pastel M&Ms for Easter, or chocolates for Christmas. The one below holds sea shells!

Black and white checks on anything-tile, rugs, floors-adds instant graphic appeal.

Winter Hideaway

Tucked behind The Shabby House in Boise, a small garden shed has been magically transformed into a charming winter hideaway. As you enter the shed, concrete blocks lead the way to an inviting daybed piled high with fluffy white linens and a warm fur blanket to wrap yourself up in. If you get too cold, you can pull the curtains back and have a sip of brandy from the silver liquor decanter. It's the perfect spot to daydream, read, or recharge your batteries after a long winter.

My sisters and I had a similar hideout in our backyard in Spokane that my Father built out of sturdy wood beams. It had a ladder that led up to a rooftop deck hidden high up in the pine trees. Many summer nights we slept under the stars in our comfy sleeping bags reading Nancy Drew by flashlight and watching for the elusive shooting star while our faithful dog, Tutti, patrolled the yard-keeping bad guys at bay.

If you don't have your own secret hideaway, I suggest you look around for a small spot in the garden or a lounge chair in front of a sunny window or warm fireplace where you can daydream and recharge your own batteries!

I hope these pics inspire you to create your own special spot.

In the dead of winter, when the anticipation and excitement of Christmas has passed, and all that's left is a bit of a gloomy gray day outside-we all need a little silly stuff! Christmas in the Rear View Mirror

As we steer towards Valentine's Day and Christmas is fading fast in the rear view mirror, I wanted to share a few pics of my booth all decorated up for Christmas. I hope you enjoy this last look at my fav holiday as I bubble-wrap and pack-up the last brilliant bulb, red ribbon, and shiny bauble-not to be seen again until the snow flies next November!

A Vintage Christmas Memory

I held my breath as Dad said, "Alright girls, here goes!" He reached around to the back of the tree and plugged in the string of lights. They flickered for an instant-causing me to shut my eyes tightly. If they didn't light, it would take hours for him to go through each bulb trying to identify the burned out culprit. When I opened my eyes, the tree was a dazzling display of light and color. The tinsel we had thrown on the tree moments before (even though Mom complained she would still be picking it up at Easter) sparkled brightly among the large multi-colored bulbs. I let out my breath while Julia clapped and Teresa shouted in delight. Christmas Eve had finally arrived.

The three of us sat in front of the fire on our fluffy comforters as the logs crackled and popped. We snacked on cheddar cheese ball with Ritz crackers and drank Mom's special 7-UP punch that fizzed in our mouths like exploding cherries. I reached into the box of chocolates and pulled out a dark square I hoped was an orange creme. There was a small hole poked in the bottom. "Dad," I yelled, "Julia is poking the chocolates again to find the good ones!"

Mom yelled from the kitchen, "Quit squabbling girls! I think it's time to open your present." We scrambled off our comforters and fought for the best spot under the tree. We already knew which present we would open.

I pulled on the ends of the slick silver ribbon and watched it slide to the floor. As I turned the package over and slid my finger under the tape to open the package, the aroma of perfume and memories of my grandmother spilled out along with the pretty pink flannel pajamas. Memories of visits with my Mamma B in Kentucky: playing hide-and-seek in the tall corn, trying to catch fireflies in Mason jars, and hiding out from tornados in the cellar.

I grabbed the pajamas and ran down the hall to my bedroom to quickly change. As I sat back down under the tree, I pulled my legs up to my chest and hugged my knees as I melted into the soft thick flannel. I could almost feel Mamma B's arms around me and hear her whisper, "I love you child."

Outside, the snow fell softly while reports on the radio said Santa was getting closer to Spokane. As I gazed out the window on this magical night, I almost believed it was true.

Dreaming of a White Christmas

White is soothing and serene. It cleanses and refreshes. For example, one dusting of white powder on a cold winter day turns the drab, brown landscape of fall into a sparkling winter wonderland. Who wouldn't dream of a white Christmas?

An all-white decorating scheme for your home will instantly relax jangled nerves as you walk through the door at the end of a hectic day. The beauty in monochrome decorating is the ease in which pieces from different styles and periods look perfectly pulled together. And if something doesn't match-you're only a can of white spray paint away! Just remember to add in texture such as a fluffy white rug or fabulous faux fur pillow.

I hope you enjoy the following pics I shot recently at the Antique World Mall. I don't know about you, but I feel calmer already.

Ooh La La Decorating!

I strolled lazily through the Puces de Vanves sipping my café latte while munching on a flaky buttery croissant. “Bonjour,” I called out to the old weathered man at the back of the booth. He smiled slightly as I spied a set of battered blue and white kitchen canisters with the words, “Farine”, “Café”, “Sucre” and “Pates” in faded black letters on the front. Trying to contain my excitement I asked nonchalantly, “Combien ça?” (How much is that?). But he was seasoned and saw the tiny twinkle in my eye. He replied back in broken English with a price equal to a week’s salary. I sighed as I bid him and the canisters farewell and moved on to the next booth. I’ve been to this Paris flea market so many times-IN MY DREAMS!

Alas, I’ve only been to Paris in my dreams! I love to collect Eiffel Towers and hope someday to see it in person-especially at night when its 20,000 lights sparkle and illuminate the sky for as far as you can see. The following pics I took of romantic decorating at the Antique World Mall and The Shabby House (in Boise) remind me of what I might find at a Paris flea market. Hope you enjoy your little bit of Paris today!

No-Fail Fall Decorating

Hello,

Fall decorating is the no-brainer of all the decorating months. Think of it as that easy class you took in high school-art, gym, home economics-definitely not algebra or chemistry! It doesn’t take much to decorate for fall. Just scatter a few brilliant leaves here-and-there to create a cozy feel in your home and make you want to put on a warm sweater and sip cocoa in front of a roaring fire. Fall is also the cheapest season to decorate for (thank goodness with Christmas right around the corner). Grab a pile of leaves from the front yard, a weathered grape vine from the garden, and a few apples and oranges from the grocery store, and you’re good to go! Like I said-gym class for sure.

Pink is the perfect romantic decorating color. What little girl didn't want her room painted a soft pretty pink that made her feel like a princess? I remember when my sisters and I begged our Mother to paint our room pink and the chaos that followed as the three of us tried to help her-she ended up with a pink foot after stepping in the paint! I still love pink (no, you're never too old) and have pink file folders at my desk at work, a pink jacket, and huge pink suitcase. Fantastic Frightful Finds!

As the weather gets colder, so does the yard sale trail. My bf (and partner-in-crime) and I long for those summer mornings when the bright pink and green yard sale signs stretched for miles and we ran well past noon on coffee and twenty dollars. With those days fading like daylight, we headed last Sat to The Shabby House in Boise for our vintage fix.

The Shabby House is another adorable antique shop in Boise filled to the brim with fun (and frightful) vintage treasures. So grab a cup of hot coffee (cause baby it's cold outside) and join us as we browse through the spooky shop.

Preview of a Princess

Hello,

Everybody has a dream. A dream can sometimes feel out-of-reach or unattainable. It can be easily crushed like the grapes to make your favorite wine or distinguished like the candles on your last birthday cake by self-doubt or even a little constructive criticism. Sometimes it's easier to dismiss the dream than plow through all the disappointment.

I love to write stories. I've been writing tall tales since I saw a scrappy short girl in elementary school. Over the years, I've taken writing classes and submitted stories to publications, magazines, and contests. At first, all I received was the stock form rejection letter that always started with, "Dear Author." It would have been so easy to quit after the first 40 of these, but after a few more years of writing classes and rewriting, I started to receive some encouraging personal letters back from editors addressed to me-not, "Dear Author." The closest I've come to selling a manuscript was my childrens' picture book, "Princess Daisy." But alas, it was returned after review because it didn't fit into the publisher's plans for that year. It was crushing to come so close to a dream and have it taken away. But I've come to far to give up now.

My Mother is an artist. She paints acrylics in vivid color and her striking charcoal black-and-white portraits look so realistic-you think the person is actually looking at you. She has won local awards in Spokane for her artwork, but has lacked the confidence to go any farther with her artwork-until now.

So, my Mother and I decided to combine our talents into one Mother-Daughter book by self-publishing Princess Daisy. Prose by me: illustrations by her. It's the perfect combination of generations and talents-and accomplishes two dreams in one! Here's a preview of Princess Daisy. The tall tale of a daisy who believes she is a princess and is too good for the cottage garden where she lives, and the journey in which she learns what it really means to be a princess.

I hope you enjoy this preview. We're still working on finalizing the drawings and layout and hope for a Spring book release (spring is perfect for a flower book). I'll also let you know how the self-publishing process works in case you have a book dream of your own. We'd also love your feedback in the comments on the story/illustrations.

One morning, the hot sun was boiling over in the sky.
The babies' breath below her were thirsty and started to cry.
Princess lowered her leaves to give them her last drops of saved rain.
"I'm thirsty too," Princess muttered, "but I'm not one to complain."

She was tired of caring for the babies. They were a pain!
All of this responsibility and sharing was a drain.
From this miserable cottage garden she had to be free.
So Princess started to make plans for when and how she would flee.

Page 4-

While the flowers were all dreaming of sunshine and good weather,
Princess dug-up her roots and gathered all her leaves together.
She gazed up into the stars above and plotted her new course.
And with one look back at the garden, she left without remorse.

Her roots were like long spider's legs that carried her through the night.
The full moon and the bright stars overhead were her only light.
After hours of walking, her roots were wilted and dried out.
When she saw the ocean up ahead, she gave a happy shout.

A Woman's Prerogative

Hello,

It's a woman's prerogative to change her mind on many things: outfits, fav color, milk or dark chocolate, men, and of course-her home decor. Just ask my husband, who has humored me and smiled through my sunflower, 70s, country, and now what I'll call "shabby modern" decor phase (modern with a mix of vintage). Shortly after I posted about redoing my living room with new black & white vintage Boise pics I got at a yard sale, I decided the layout just wasn't working. An avid watcher of HGTV, I realized I lacked a focal point or what they call the "wow" factor in the room. Being on a budget (like most Americans right now), I looked around the house to see what I already owned that could be moved to the large focal point wall.

On an opposite wall, I had a large mirror found at the thrift store I had painted black, and in another room I had a set of black ornate metal flower plaques. I moved those over to the main wall, rearranged the sofa so it's facing the window (opened up the room a bit), and moved the black and whites on the far wall. When I was done-Wa La! New cute room with a little more "wow" factor. I hope you like it.

P.S.-My walls are a bright, cheerful yellow that makes the black pop, but the color doesn't show up in these pics.

Something Old is New Again

Hello,

With a little imagination, you can turn something old into something new. Take for instance the old aluminum accordion file holder above. When I first saw it sitting on a table amongst old Christmas cards and faded fabric, I didn't even know what the heck it was. After seeing how cool it looked unfolded, I decided it would make a perfect shabby magazine rack-perfect for all my decorator magazines.

The white wine rack above was already painted white, but was bland and lacked any pizazz. I painted the front with chalkboard paint so you can label all your favorite wines and decoupaged a pretty black and white floral paper on the bottom. I even included the white chalk!

A pair of pink French hat boxes complete with the Eiffel Tower sit in front of a gold mirror frame bathroom medicine cabinet I found at the Thrift Store out in the "yard" section.

I love this yellow hand-painted hutch that sits in front of a yellow and black twin headboard with rose applique.
A French poster in a gilded frame hangs on the wall. The white plate rack on the left holds blue London tins with pictures of the London Bridge.

A "zoom-out" of the booth. Yes, this pic is lopsided. And no, I wasn't drinking that early in the morning-just one too many cups of java!

The magazine rack above was already white, but another drab boring piece that needed a little flower decoupage front, distressed edges, and black painted sides.

I painted the bottom of this shabby old wood toolbox in black to add depth and decoupaged some smart-looking striped paper on the top.

Hello,

Vintage items look great mixed with modern furnishing and accessories. I love to mix old and new items together for a unique look.

I recently updated my living room wall after I scored four cool vintage black and white pictures of Boise landmarks at a yard sale. They were already framed and ready-to-hang for $20.00 each! They look hip above my modern, Italian red leather sectional.

A pretty black, scroll chandelier with sparkly crystals hangs in the corner.

"Green" Decorating

Hello!

Mother Nature is the ultimate green decorator. Who else can take a few stray seeds, scattered by the wind, mixed with a little water and sunshine, and create such beautiful decor? The huge Hollyhocks in my front garden, that tower almost to the top of the house in a riot of pink blooms, came from a few seeds my sister-in-law gave me many, many years ago. And the Trumpet Creeper that covers the iron trellis with orange flowers that feed the hummingbirds all summer, came from a small start my guys planted on my 40th b-day (a few years ago). The beauty of garden decor is it's so easy-and if you plant perennials-they come back effortlessly every year. Here's a few pics of my pretty front cottage garden. Hope you enjoy!

Ok, so not all of my garden decor is green. But every cottage garden needs one set of sparkly twinkle lights to welcome you home at night.

Sunflowers are a great cottage garden flower. When you clean the beds out in the fall, save a few flowers so the birds can munch on the tasty seeds during the barren winter months.

I try to plant only perennials in the beds now and save the pretty pink petunias, marigolds, and blue lobelia for the urns. It's cheaper and easier!

Cute Garden Bike and a Mystery Solved

The next time you see an old, dilapidated bike with flat tires and worn paint, don't pass it by, wheel it home and into your garden. An old bike makes a charming decorative garden piece and if it has a basket-an instant planter! I found this cute English bike at a sale for $10.00. It fit right in with my shabby backyard decor of black iron trellises, huge urns filled with pretty pink flowers, and bubbly fountain.

If your bike sits in the soft dirt, put a small piece of wood under the kickstand so it doesn't sink or fall over when the sprinklers come on and the ground gets soft.

A green, crowned frog sits under the fountain-waiting for the magical kiss that will turn him into the Prince he knows he can be!

My son and I spent a few days on summer vacation last year making this cobblestone extension off of our concrete patio. It was a fairly easy project. The two of us pulled up the grass (it was already worn in this spot by the dog), leveled the dirt, and then layed pavers from Lowes. The more uneven and shabbier, the better! It's the perfect spot for coffee in the morning or a glass of wine at night as the stars twinkle through the trees.

A Perfect Cup

Creative people always find a way to express their creativity-even in mundane, everyday items. For example, on my birthday in June, a good friend invited me over for coffee. I knew he made a good cup of joe, but I watched in fascination as he poured a perfect "rosetta" with the steamed milk on top. It was so pretty I didn't want to drink it! Finally, giving in to caffeine withdrawls, I found out it was as good as it looked. Starbucks will never taste the same again!

And don't forget the killer homemade stones!

What Every Girl Needs

While cruising the streets of Boise on a recent Saturday morning yard sale hunt with my bf, we spotted this adorable tiny pink convertible-complete with pink wheels and a Betty Boop bumper sticker! We thought it was the perfect yard sale car and could see ourselves happily driving from sale-to-sale, enjoying the sun, with treasures sticking out of the back. Alas, our dream was crushed as we realized it wasn't for sale! We think it's what every self-respecting vintage girl needs. What do you think?

New and Improved (at the antique mall)

I've been seriously MIA on Mamma B's Attic with my hectic work schedule, graduations, weddings, etc. It's time to get back to what I love-talking (virtually of course) and vintage decorating!

I spent part of last week painting, prepping, and primping my new and improved booth at the antique mall. I was overdue upgrading my tiny wall space as it was constantly overflowing with treasures I just couldn't pass up at yard sales or while rummaging through the thrift stores. My son and his girlfriend are also helping me with the booth as they've caught the vintage bug.

Here's some pics of our new booth. Our goals was to make it fun and cheerful! Hope you enjoy it!

We painted the white chippy shelf with chalkboard paint on the drawer and top and included some pretty pastel chalk and a pink and blue flower button. So cute!

An expanded view of the booth. We painted the drab, brown walls a bright, cheerful yellow. You can see it from the distance while heading down the aisle!

We painted these white shutters a sunny yellow and then distressed them to have the white show through. They sit behind some chippy white and yellow candlestick holders.

We accented the drawers and top of this desk with black paint and a flower applique to match the black chair with flower pad. An Eiffel Tower tea light sits on top and a handmade (sewn by me) flower chenille pillow rests on the chair.

A romantic scroll tea light holder sits on top of a black pedestal with a white wicker planter (found for .25 at a yard sale) behind it.

This man-in-the-moon toaster cookie jar is adorable and my fav item in the booth!

A flowered chenille bedspread sits on a green high-back chair at a shabby white farm table (we found the farm table at a yard sale for $5. It had stuff sitting on it and the guy selling it didn't think it was worth putting in the sale.).

I painted a white window pane black and added a gingham curtain to the back and a pretty scroll applique on the glass.

We painted the edges of this yellow twin bed with black and added a rose applique to the headboard and foot board.

Hello!

I've posted before about the Antique World Mall (and The Annex) in Boise, where I have a small booth, but I've never shared any pics with you of this fantastic store. It's filled to the rafters with row after row of fabulous treasures-everything from Shabby Chic to one-of-a-kind collectibles. You could spend many happy hours (I certainly have) treasure hunting while sipping complimentary coffee and munching on cookies. They were also the 2008 Boise Weekly "Best-of-Boise" Winner. I love being part of this mall-you would too!

In addition, every third Fri of the month is "Save After Six" where from 6-9pm participating dealers have additional discounts, there are drawings for Mall Money, and hot popcorn, cookies, and coffee are served. Antique Mall Updates

Hello!

I've spent the last week updating my booth at the Antique World Mall in Boise. Over the last few Sat morning yard sales, I've found tons of treasures-a reward for venturing out in the freezing, rainy, cold Spring mornings. Here's a few pics of my loot:

A vintage "American in Paris" guide with Eiffel Tower on the front (you know I love Eiffel Towers-this one might end up at my house).

A vintage "French for Travelers" guide, Mother's Day plaque, and silver crown card holder.

A beautiful ceramic flower lamp with urn bottom-only ONE flower was damaged! A shabby blue baby doll crib, elephant child's planter, and pink ballerina birthday candles.

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. My son and girlfriend have started to go with me yard sale shopping. They are into "vintage" stuff and bought a few things to sell at the mall. It's so fun to have a common interest. They went "vintage style" to the Senior Prom this year. They looked so adorable!

Shabby French Door Divider

You can make a pretty room divider out of an old, weathered door. I made mine out of this adorable skinny french door I found at a sale last Spring. The old farmhouse it belonged to was being sold off (piece-by-piece) and then leveled to make way for a subdivision-what a shame! I arrived 5 minutes too late to snag a beautiful, crystal chandelier, but ran when I saw this treasure out in the yard.

To make the door sturdy, I bought black, metal shelf brackets from Home Depot and screwed them in to the bottom of the door on each side. This allows the door to stand upright and be moved anywhere in the room.

With the warmer weather finally arriving, I've moved mine outdoors. It sits between two chairs with a black tea light holder and sparkly crystals that give the patio a warm, inviting look after dark.

It's super easy. Why don't you give it a try?

On a side note, I have a new little buddy that follows me around the house and yard and jumps in my lap anytime he feels a little scared (like when the giant lab Alaiki walks by). His name is Jacks and he's my sons/girlfriends new miniature puppy who I occasionally "babysit" when they are out. He's such a cute little squirt!

Pretty Purple Pansies

Hello!

Spring has finally sprung here in Boise as tiny grape hyacinths and pretty pink tulips push through the cold, hard dirt. The first warm day sends us flocking to the local Home Improvement Store where we browse dreamily through the garden department-drooling over row after row of flowers and vegetables!

I spent a relaxing Sunday in my garden cleaning up the front bed and planting a few pretty purple pansies in urns and pots. Here's a few pics to brighten your day!

Strawberries start to green and spread beneath the Eiffel tower.

The Hollyhocks that will grow tall as the house by mid-June are now only a few inches tall.

The weathered arbor with its twinkling garden lights and Trumpet Creeper vine (that will bear beautiful orange blooms for the hummingbirds) beacons you up the walk for a visit.

Shabby Decorating Down Mexico Way!

Hello!

My hubby and I just got back from spending seven wonderful days in Mexico with a few of our favorite friends. After the long, dreary winter in Boise, Idaho, the sights and colors of Mexico assaulted our senses! The turquoise water, lush green palm trees, and white beaches seemed unreal.

I also found romantic, shabby decorating everywhere we went-from the restaurant on the beach with its breezy, blue gauze drapes and pretty, pink tablecloths to the worn-down house painted bright pink with yellow flowers peeking out of a window box. I realized that all around the world there are woman who want to create beautiful, romantic spaces-no matter what their income or situation. They use what they have to make their house a home.

Here's a few pics. I wish I had one of the pink house, but we were flying by in a taxi and I couldn't get a good shot!

You could pull the blue gauze drapes shut for a romantic dinner.

Or chat with a girlfriend sitting at this pretty white iron garden table.

Thrifty Thrift Store Finds

Hello,

I love the Thrift Store! Every day is a good day at the Thrift Store-you never know what treasure waits for you under a pile of old kitchenware, amongst the tattered used books, or out in the "yard" section. All it costs you is the time to rummage through the shelves and a couple of dollars-all for charity! Gals, if you don't frequent your local Thrift Store, you need to start!

Here's a few cute finds from the Deseret Industries Thrift Store I picked-up on my way home tonight:

An old chipped white window, a small aluminum watering can, and a black art deco birdcage-all for a song!
An old black and silver rotating display. I'm going to use this in my antique booth to hang vintage greeting cards and pretty linens and scarves.

Hello!

I guess the bad economy has finally filtered down to the yard sale scene as people are going to extreme lengths to try and pry a hard earned dollar from your wallet. Even though the weather in Boise was only in the mid-40s, this strapping fellow was willing to stand out in the cold for hours flagging down drive-by motorists. We weren't quite brave enough to see what was behind his sign, but we did find a few small treasures inside the garage.

Definitely the best yard sale sign we've ever seen!

Spring Yard Sale Treasures

It catches your eye in the distance on the street corner ahead-it's dazzling bright pink, yellow, or neon green color makes your heart skip a beat. You squint hard. Is it really true? As you close the distance, you realize it's not a dream. You're car goes on auto-pilot and switches lanes. It doesn't matter if you're on the way to work, church, or to pick-up the dog, you will follow until you reach your destination. So is the magnetic pull of the fist yard sale sign of the season!

My bf Beri and I set out this past chilly Saturday in hopes of spotting just such a sign. Loaded up on coffee and Girl Scout Thin Mints, we were not disappointed. Here's a few Spring treasures we found along the way-all for under $10!

Pretty French Egg Cups

Hello!

Easter signals the first real sign of Spring. It is a symbol of rebirth after a long, dreary winter-arriving just as we are about to give up hope it will ever come. Then slowly, like magic, the brown landscape begins to turn green and cheerful tulips and daffodils pop-up around the garden. We start to clean-out the cobwebs and sweep-out the dust of our winter nests. We are energized again.

I love decorating for any and every holiday! With Easter just around the corner, I've started putting out some of my favorite Easter decorations. I bought these adorable French egg cups from a seller on Ebay in France. She had bought an old school house with her husband in the French countryside and was remodeling it to be a Bed & Breakfast. How lucky! They look pretty on my black hutch and bring a bit of France to Boise, Idaho.

This white, speckled cup feels right at home sitting near the small, silver Eiffel tower.

This one visits the London Tower next to the adorable picture of my grand niece Gracie-Mae.

I keep a pair of black urns filled with tiny spruce trees lit-up all year round. You can decorate them to fit any season: silver star garland at Christmas, red hearts at Valentines Day, and pastel eggs at Easter.

Colored photos printed in black & white (you can do this at any photo kiosk) look vintage in silver frames.

Black and white ceramic flower balls bought at Target sit in a black wire basket on the bottom of the hutch.

Springtime at the Antique Mall

Hello,

I don't know about you, but I'm sure tired of the gloomy gray winter. We've hardly seen the sun shine for weeks now! I decided if I couldn't have Spring outside, I would bring Spring inside (to the Antique Mall). I spent the afternoon in my booth putting out vintage garden items: weathered watering cans, seed packets, green McCoy planters, flower frogs, and tiny hand-painted clay pots. I took a few pics to share with you and bring a little Spring to your day!

I hot glue-gunned sparkly silver letters in GROW on the front of an aluminum tub and filled with Spring flowers.
Watering cans line up by a brass bunny, green flower frogs, and a tiny doll house fountain.

The display case is filled with cute pastel children's planters and mini globe banks.

The Paris shelf holds a silver Eiffel Tower, pretty French flower canisters, and a blue-and-pink Eiffel Tower cocktail shaker. Ooh la la!

A vintage German paper mache Easter egg rests in a galvanized carrier next to vintage ribbon and a yellow flower mister.

A Texas fruitcake tin, blue striped mixing bowls, and vintage french egg cups complete this pretty shelf.

A pink aluminum cake carrier is ready for a party and sits on top of several picnic baskets.

On top of the highest shelf, an art deco black birdcage and black iron planter watch over the booth.
A pile of misc. shabby chic items rest on the floor.

I love vintage valentines. They brighten up the dull and dreary days of January after the last ornament has been safely packed away. Vintage valentines have a timeless charm and will only set you back a few dollars. You can tuck one into the corner of a mirror, scatter them around the house, or surprise someone you love (maybe leave it anonymously on their pillow). The cute rolling pin and pie valentine above sits on my kitchen counter beckoning me to bake (maybe a chocolate pie).

Fun Vintage Decorating in the Bar

Hello.

I hope you're having a great day. It's been snowing tons in Boise the last few days. I had a mishap in an icy parking lot that put me behind a little in my recovery from knee surgery. So, please, please be careful out there while your driving, walking, and playing in the snow. And for goodness sakes, wear sensible shoes ("fashion" boots don't count-believe me I know)!

Here's a few pics of how I used vintage items in my fun, retro bar (formally the boring living room).

A vintage ice bucket sits next to the bar and can be filled with ice and wine or sparkling champagne to greet guests when they enter the bar. A cute black moon pillow (one of the star and moons pillows I made for presents this Christmas) sits on the red lounge chair.
A 1960s sunburst clock hangs above the overhang of the bay window and always shows 5 o'clock (it's 5 o'clock somewhere)! A "Lounge" light announces the bar is open.
An old hotel bell sits on the bar. Just ring, and the waitress will come running in to take your order. Chocolate Martini anyone?

The black iron wine rack holds a vintage silver ice bucket and a collection of cocktail shakers.

Is it 5 yet?

Sewing Up a Star Storm

Hello.

I’m not sure if it’s the economy or just a desire to give something special and unique to those you care for, but I’m joining the large number of people who are making Christmas gifts this year.

I love these adorable star and moon pillows. I haven’t sewn them for years and wasn’t even sure the old sewing machine would fire up. It was so fun to browse through the fabric store and pick-out the perfect fabric and buttons to match each of my friends/families décor. For example, I picked a furry brown fleece with pink spots and a silver Eiffel Tower button for one of my nieces in college to match her bedspread (she’s going to Paris this spring).

I’ve got all the patterns cut-out and am now onto the sewing frenzy. It helps to have a glass of wine and HGTV on. I’ll post more pics again when they’re completed.

Christmas Treasures from the Thrift Store

Hello!

I hope you're doing well and ready to stuff yourself on Thursday and shop-till-you-drop on Friday. This time of year, I crave pumpkin pie (especially for breakfast with a cup of coffee). Well, I couldn't wait until Thursday and made one today 4-days-early (to the excitement of the guys in my house). It totally hit the spot with a dollop of whipped creme and will be even better in the morning!

I stopped at the thrift store on the way home from work on Friday and found the cutest Christmas treasures. A few will stay home-for-the-holidays at my house, but most will go to the antique mall and wait patiently to be adopted by other vintage loving gals like myself.

The first is a 1960s vintage plastic light-up Santa (I remember these. Maybe you do too!)

An adorable 1960s metal snowman tray with white rick-rack and red plaid and polka-dot trim. The deal of the year-a beautiful cast iron ornate red tree stand (for $6.99)!

A cheerful Christmas tablecloth with red rick-rack trim. It would be sooooo cute on the kid's table.

A pretty hand embroidered Dutch Christmas linen that says, "Boas Festas" (Happy Holidays).

I was feeling festive and put up my tiny red Christmas tree with silver and white penguins and black sparkly balls. It's not too early is it?

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas-at the Antique Mall.

Christmas seems to come earlier and earlier every year. Our Christmas open house at the Antique World Mall in Boise, Idaho (where I have a booth), was November 1st!

I love the charm of vintage Christmas items. If you haven't Christmas shopped at your local antique store yet, you need to grab your best gf and go. You can find adorable santas, angels, and sparkly silver aluminum trees that will whisk you back to Christmases past. Here's the added bonus: vintage items are usually less expensive, better quality, and much cuter than anything you can buy at a department store.

I snapped a few pics of my antique booth to share with you. I hope they have you humming Christmas carols in no time.

The "JOY" is made of old plastic store letters I found at the thrift store for .25 each. I dug through the pile of broken and scratched ones until I found a J O Y and a N E S T.
A sweet shabby white baby doll crib waits patiently to be taken home while a 1950s ladies blue hat with dotted lace sits on it's edge saying-please wear me to town.
